    President's Letter

    Greetings SMPS’rs!

    I rarely find myself at a loss for words but this month it seems the creative well has been running low. It must be a January thing which isn’t surprising seeing as how we are on day 83 of the first month of the year.

    The journey to write this month’s “words of wisdom” began with the simple Google search, “Why Professional Development Matters”.  I was somewhat taken aback the entire front page focused only on educators. I mean, I shouldn’t be surprised as I attend several expos a year where just such a thing is happening.

    It did get me thinking about it a little more. Do we place a premium on Professional Development? What does that look like? We know that our architects and engineers continually stay up to date on their certifications and will seek out additional opportunities. But as marketers in the A/E/C industry are we doing all we can to make Professional Development a priority.

    So why is Professional Development important to your career? A few points to consider.

    Professional Development:

    • Opens new opportunity.
    • Gives you a competitive edge.
    • Makes you confident.
    • Increases your level of productivity.
    • Makes you more effective and efficient.
    • Makes you versatile.
    • Increases awareness.


    Guess what? SMPS-KY can be a vehicle used for Professional Development. Whether it be webinars, monthly programs, or newsletters we have you covered. Work and life are hectic and busy. Taking time out to grow yourself professionally is critical not only for your success but the success of your firm.

    Be on the lookout for the invitation to the March QBS (Qualifications-Based Selection) Panel. This is shaping up to be one of the best we have put on. We have partnered with the KY Association of Counties for this to be a CE opportunity for elected officials.  We hope to both give you an opportunity to network with government decision makers and also educate them on SMPS and our industry.

    Matthew Vernon, S.I. joined the L.E. Gregg Associates team as a Project Manager this winter.  Vernon has over ten years of experience on diverse projects involving, earthwork, concrete, reinforcing steel, masonry, and structural steel.
